Thats not right, it should be about 850, when starting from cold and also the same when hot, could be throttle sticking, do a search on throttle sticking on here.

The throttle cables are a bit prone to icing if it gets cold enough. I think condensation manages to drip from the bonnet and get in. I did once experience driving along, took my foot off the gas and it carried on as though cruise was switched on. Was a really cold day though (similar to the last few days). Once it had sat in the car park in town, it went back to normal.

What can happen when its cold and icy is the positive crankcase pressure can contain moisture and this is returned via the breathers into the throttle body, as the mist hits the cold air coming into the throttle body it freezes on the butterfly and holds it in place, scary thing when it happens. As for cold start. My V6 when first started is around 800 850, when warm drops to 750 (as verified by a t4) whereas the rev counter makes it look a little lower around 700.

More than likely Duncan, I have some 75 owner friends in Norway and it happened there on more than one occasion, we finally solved the mystery by disconnecting the breathers temporarily and this proved too be the cause.
