We were discussing the public's view of sentencing in the common room this morning and I thought it might be time to draw your attention to THIS again.
Our discussion was not, in any way, trying to compare extreme rhetoric, ie. "hug a hoody" versus "hang 'em high". This sort of argument can be seen elsewhere on the internet with those who know least shouting loudest, as usual
On the contrary, our discussion was to do with the public's perception of how a sentence is arrived at and what, if any, guidelines are used.
The link I've included above does its best to explore sentencing options in any given case and attempts to allow the observer the opportunity of giving consideration to what factors might be mitigating or aggravating and to what extent those factors should influence the final sentence.
