To be honest, I find the Royal Mail perfectly fine, and usually pretty fast. I often get things arrive the day after I buy them.
It is possible to get things DHL'd overnight from Europe (other overnight couriers are available, but it still goes wrong sometimes. I once had a parcel 'get stuck in Customs', which was interesting as it was coming from inside the EU.
