It lloks a bit like the ABS (Antilock Braking System) speed signal and reverse signal wires for satnav, except the wire colours and location are wrong.

Could be for the transmission range (S/D/Snow) switch though it seems to be the wrong end and colours aren't quite right either.

A mystery indeed

I take it this is on the V8
Could it be something to do with the Auto box fitted to the Rover V8?.
Do you know if it connects to anything the other end or does it disappear into the main loom?

Yep it's on the V8, don't know about the other end, will have to pull the console out (again) to find it

Auto box idea would also tie into Duncans thoughts

I looked on the V8 wiring diagrams and couldn't seeanything with that combination of colours. What age is the car, and could you confirm the colours asthey are not 100% clear.

Right colours are

Red/White
Black
Yellow/Blue
Grey/Yellow

Second colour being the trace colour - as best as I can make out

Well I've been though the circuit diagrams and found nothing. Even tothe stage I've found wiring to an 'off road' valve in the autobox on the V6 75. Odd.

There's no circuits included for the V8 autobox, so it may be related to that. I'd suggest some kind of switch, because the R/W is usually for illumination, with B as ground.
