The purpose of this forum by Thack

Thack
Colleagues!

Hi from a newbie! I've only recently been reminded of this forum and am happy to be here.

I'm also a member of the https://the75andztclub.co.uk forum, and it made me wonder: what is the purpose of this forum?

I genuinely don't mean that in any disparaging or negative way - I'm speaking in honest enquiry. I assume the other forum was around first, so there must have been some reason for setting up this forum covering much the same subject area. Could anyone explain the history of how we ended up with two forums? Is there a specific thing that this forum does better?

I'd love to hear more about the history and why this forum was created. Thanks, guys.

Hi Steve,
The forum was set up by the previous moderating team of the Owners club (OC) There was a difference of opinion as to what an Owners club's function should be. As a result of the falling out between the directors of the OC and the then moderating team the Moderators were removed from the OC. This was very much the same as the OC being formed after splitting with the MGR club back in 2007 IIRC. This forum was then born.
Many of the people on here have been or are members of the OC but there are also people on here that do not appear on the OC.
This forum doesn't have a 2 tier membership system, all membership is free, yes there is a donation button but it is 100% voluntary and you may see an annual thread inviting people to donate if they wish, there are no plans to change this whatsoever.

It is a sad fact that people will always see things differently and fall out, it would be nice to think that the common goal to keep the cars going would be enough to stop this but we are all human.

History often repeats itself as you can see with the OC club split with the MGR and the community split with the OC. There is a further split where a club called The enthusiasts was created after a falling out with the OC and although the forum is largely dormant that has transposed to a facebook community.

Just to end. This is my memory of the sequence of events I am happy to be corrected if I have it a little wrong but the essentials are there.
PS you may see that my user name here is quite similar to one on the OC, it is no coincidence :-)

Cheers
Dave...
Welcome to all who have managed to migrate ;)

I'm afraid I can't shed any light on it.

I only purchased my 75 three years ago and both forums (fora) were already in existence.

I think Dave's explanation sums it up nicely, though ISTR the moderators were only banned from the OC shortly after they started this site which was intented to run alongside the OC and have a different aim. That is a less controlled atmosphere, and less money oriented.

After that, personally I felt uncomfortable the way the OC was treating people including myself. For example, I posted that I wasn't impressed by a particular supplier and how they had handled a purchase I made, and was immediately shouted down (in spite of it being a perfectly fair comment). At the same time some fairly 'strong' political views were being left alone even though the policy was 'no politics'. And when I say 'strong' those posts felt like a personal attack on me and my family. So I left, permanently.

Many others either left or were banned, and found this place more friendly. It's quieter now than it used to be, but still has useful and informative posts (especially Steve's how to's), and a fair bit of knowledge to share. And there's usually fairly quick answers to questions when they do arise.

HTH.

Good evening Thack.
Dave's post sums it up nicely. Just a point of interest, you joined in 2012 made 6 posts and then disappeared for 13 years, so "newbie" is stretching a point. :)
Anyway, welcome back and, as ever this forum is free to join and free to use. That IMHO is difference between an "owners club" and a "community".

Yes, so I see! Truth be told, in those 13 years I forgot about the existence of this forum (or more accurately I think I merged the two forums in my memory).

Anyway, thanks for the background on how the forum came about - very interesting.
