Now I'm back in the land of the living, so to speak, please can anybody give me some assistance in setting up a Synology NAS as a media server on a Windows network?

Thanks :)

I can help with some aspects, but haven't done anything media server specific. What's the question?

I use it as a backup device at the moment Duncan and normally stream my media from my main PC but I want to use the NAS as the media server so we can watch films on the TV downstairs without the main PC being switched on.

I have all my media backed up to the NAS but not sure whether I can gain access to the backup to stream films or whether I need to copy them anywhere specific.

At the moment my TV / bluray sees the NAS but that's all, can't get into it.

I think you have to make sure the media server is active in the settings page, then put your media files in the video or music folder as appropriate.
