PaulT
Would have liked to be at the nano ths weekend but we shall be collecting Max on Saturday:

Poor little chap has been starved, looks like bitten by other dogs etc.

We have the pleasure of giving him a new home.

Nice one!

I'm sure you'll look after him and he'll soon be back to what he should be, and ready to start a new life leaving whatever rubbish he's had to endure behind.....

Keep us posted!

Well done Paul. It will be good to see the "before and after" Max. I hope he's not too shell shocked and that he can integrate well.

As a few words of encouragement, I know of a lovely Golden Labrador, coincidentally also called Max. He's a fabulous example, looks gorgeous, uber friendly and great with other dogs. He's full of the joys of life. He was also a rescue. When his current owner collected him he had been taken from his smack-head 'owner' and was undernourished, nervous of people and covered in scrapes, scuffs and cigarette burns particularly round his face and nose. Now you couldn't hope to meet a nicer dog. Fantastic boy. It's all in the past.
She told me she was contacted by a friend to be told the dog was in the hands of the RSPCA following a drugs raid. She bathed him and organised his vet treatment but otherwise just treated him like a dog with no feeling sorry or suchlike and he responded quickly. I was totally shocked when she told me as I had met them many times on walks and Max was a fabulously well balanced healthy boy.

Thank you for all your wishes.

Both Yve and I are looking forward to giving him a good secure life that will hopefully be the exact opposite of what he has been through in the first part of his life.

When he was collected from the pound there was also a female dobermann, Millie, who was extremely pregnant. Shortly after being taken in by the Dobermann Trust she gave birth to 10 puppies of which 8 have survived. Unfortunately, she developed bloat last weekend and rushed for emergency surgery (the Trust now has bill for £1,100 which will increase).

Thankfully there are rescue organisations to save ill treated and unwanted animals.

We collected Max from just outside Bradford on Saturday. Another possibility is that he had been a 'bait dog'. He was collected from an area of Lancashire where it is thought fun to have dog fights!

We saw Millie who seems to be recovering well. The Dobermann Trust is now trying to find the £1,300 vet bill.

Max was very nervous as we walked along the road to the car and quickly leapt inside. It is a Tourer and the new car only has a load cover and not a dog guard. The one I have just sold did! so Yve rode in the back to prevent him leaping over.

There was no whining and he looked out, occasionally laid down on the floor and was no problem travelling (just as well as it is 894 miles door to door between our UK and French houses) but often did attempt to climb over the back of the seat. We stopped at a motorway service area which was not busy but Max was nervous. We then stopped at a lay-by on an A road that was just at the side of the carriageway and not set back. Traffic was fairly heavy and Max was very frightened by it.

We arrived home and Max had a look around. He was also very boisterous. He charged around in the back garden. He was then given half of his midday feed (we should have collected him earlier in the day so as not to disrupt his routine too much) and tried to get him to lay quietly – on a par with opening a tin can with a banana – and then the other half and sometime later his last feed. However, he just wanted to leap about.

Constantly putting his paws on the furniture and at one time when we were not looking leaping on to one of the settees – dogs in our house are not allowed on the furniture or beds.

I had a can of beer and looked and noticed that he was licking the top of it. Later in the evening we had a glass of wine – he managed to get his tongue in to one of the glasses!

All in all he seemed to be full of beans but a little concerned which must be natural.

He seemed very tired as the evening progressed but would not give up until eventually he could keep his eyes open no more.

We have a low bay window in the lounge and he found he could look out occasionally barking at a dog that went by. Think this will be useful in enabling us to tell him off for doing it from inside the house.

We also have a toy stuffed dog that stands about 600mm high – there were a few attacks on it but he seems to have stopped that.

We put his bed in the kitchen last night as it has a tiled floor - he sems to have been a the very least a 'yard dog' so not exactly house trained. We got up a few times in the night to let him out and hey, no problems. In fact, he did woof a couple of times, do not know if it was to go out.

Sunday and today he seems to have calmed down a lot and if one of us goes out stands in the bay window watching.

Seems more relaxed such that he has had a couple of sleeps today.

Nice update Paul. Is he settling? Cesar Milan suggests that they integrate to they're new family within 4 days but their not machines. :)

He is settling very nicely. One problem he enjoys catching bumble bees that land on the grass and needs to get out of that very quickly otherwise there will be trouble.

He seems to have got very attached to both of us and if one of us goes out watches from the window and gets excited when we come back.

He needs socialising with other dogs and we have started on that.

He has bags of energy and the next big step will be letting him off the lead somewhere - always an interesting time.

Good point - forgot you are Lincolnshire now! When Max is ready for socialising, maybe he could hook up with our Charlie and Maddy?! :)

PaulT
Dave - that would be good. He needs to socialise with other dogs. Indoors he can see out of the bay window and barks when other dogs go by, deperately trying to get him to stop. Outside he normally resists unless the other dog barks at him.

With people he has stopped shy away from them and seems to enjoy meeting people.

Would be good for Madds too - she loves barking at other dogs from the window! Also when she's out and sees them in the distance, but when she gets close and actually meets them, she's fine. Charlie on the other hand, is cool with any dogs and humans! :)
