Scrap metal theft - E-petition by Bernard

Following a spate of theft of roadside drain and manhole covers around our area, I have found this petition which I hope some will see fit to 'sign'.

I don't like signatures, they take up too much screen space.

We've been saying this for years. Consider it signed.

signed. 75,500+ signatures.

I worked next door to a company that bought special metals.
Friday was a nightmare with a constant flow of tradesmen weighing stuff in. The most interesting being council and gas vans fetching in NEW copper pipe.
The guys that worked there were honest people earning an honest living (NEW copper pipe excluded~). They often kept someone waiting on some pretext to give the police time to arrive.
They also took reg numbers of the vehicles to deter people.

They were happy with the fortuitous rise in metal prices and didn't support or encourage the dodgy types (tradesmen excluded).

We lost all our drain covers in the village last year, very dangerous.

I've seen some of that round here Mick. Very dangerous indeed. As I sit here doing my physio excersises on my arm it makes me cringe at the shin and kneecap to think about the possible outcomes.

Over ten years ago there was a spate of road sign theft in north Notts (and probably other places). When you got out into the country lanes you had better know your way because the old cast junction signs were gone.

Planning is an unnatural process, much better to just get on with things, that way failure comes as a complete surprise instead of being preceeded by a period of worry and doubt

It's not only the railways and highways which are suffering. Your local electricity sub-station has to have nice shiny copper, not only in the cable's going to and from it, but also within the high voltage switchgear as well as extensive earthing for the metal it is made of. Nicking the stuff not only results in power outages for hundreds, maybe thousands, of people and businesses but is also downright dangerous to staff who have to go in to them. As for thoughs who are prepared to run the risk of stealing it, I'll leave it to the imagination of what happens when up to 11000v volts passes through the human body. Justice takes many forms.

They are also causing hundreds of thousands of pounds of damage on Heritage lines (Steam Railways) where engines etc being rebuilt are stripped of all Copper etc from then, Signalling cable pinched as well as track when they can get away with it.
Plus all the locations above in previouss posts, its the Scrap Merchants that are also thieves, as many things are obviously illegally obtained.
Signed already via Railway Forum.

I still love this marque and I will still be around, preferred selling to breaking, as a great runner and performer"

Absolutely right about the dealers. I don't believe that if someone turns up with a truck load of copper at a scrappy their suspicions aren't aroused???? Especially in the present climate. What do they think???

As I said earlier. the specialist metal dealer I got the pics from worked diligently with the police, sometimes delaying the transaction until they arrived, sometimes proceeding and passing the details to the police. An honest and upstanding trader generally. If only that was the norm.
The police were frequently in the car park, quite entertaining at times. "is this your vehicle?" "no, I THINK it's my dads" "where does your dad live? have you got a phone number for him?" "I don't know...I didn't mean my dad, I meant my mates"

and "you can't do me cos you can't prove I brought it and anyway, I'm not on the road"
