Question for the diesel experts by mark_bonsai

Has anyone heard of the seal(s) going in the high pressure pump on the M47 engine?

I've just been told mine have, and from the workshop manual the pump is a NIGHTMARE to get off.

I wouldn't touch the pump till I was 100% certain all other possibilities had been eliminated.. Personally i have never heard of the pump seals failing..

Have you checked the fuel pumps? Done the "leak back" checks? .. ??

Out of interest, where does the fuel go (leak to) when/if the HP seals fail??

Into the sump, unfortunately.

Either Lyndon or Mick had this problem IIRC and it's rare but not unheard of.

Dip the sump and smell the dipstick. Also check if the level is high and the oil is thin.

Someone with first hand knowledge might be along soon.

Hiya Duncan. :)

At least if the fuel leaks into the sump then it is possible to check that to be sure it is the seals that have gone.. :)

What we don't want, is for Mark to spend a small fortune changing the seals only to find that wasn't the problem! :(

So checking the easy stuff first seems the best approach.. :)

Does the engine run on easy/start?

The external seals went on mine, to get it off is something most mechanics will shy away from or at least I found them to do so. When I did find someone they did it quickly and cheaply! Pump reseal was not expensive can't remember how much though, but it might be better to have a little extra work done whilst it is off, relief spring being the one that comes to mind, I didn't do mine but it was low miles at the time.

It would certainly help if we knew where you lived, then we might be able to recommend someone who might be able to help.

As has been said, first thing to check would be whether there is any diesel in the sump.

Well, been to the garage today and the pump's definately goosed. Luckily it seems to have been dropping the diesel externally (caught by the undertray), so hopefully it's just an outer seal of some type, but an oil change won't hurt.

On Monday it's going to a specialist (Fuel Injection Services in Burscough http://www.fuelinjectionservice.co.uk ) to have the whole job done. I've been quoted a worse case senario of just over £600 if the pump requires totally reconditioning (seals, impellers, etc) but hopefully it'll be cheaper if it just needs seals. Though will my luck....

Anyway, they'll have it a couple of days, so I'm hoping to get it back about this time next week. Oh and the MOT runs out next Thursday. Doh!

Well, it's done! Back up and running at a cost of just over £650 :o luckily AA breakdown repair insurance have stumped up £475 :D so not quite as painful.

In line with my recent luck it wasn't just the seals. It turns out the internal components were "starting to break up" so it's basically been fully reconditioned.

The guy who I've been dealing with said he's taken it round the industrial estate and in his words, said it's running smoothly and "it's well quick". Admittedly the Ron Box is on nine but that's me happy.

The repair comes with a 12 month warranty and I can highly recommend Fuel Injection Services in Burscough (website link further back in this thread). They only got the car yesterday morning at 11 and they rang at lunch today to say it's done. Bearing in mind they've stripped the unit off the engine, reconditioned it, replaced it and the cars ready for pickup in 24 hours is well impressive in my book.

Now it's just got to pass it's MOT in the morning....

Hi

I have had a leaking pump for a while now. The desiel comes out of the top cover when its cold but stops when its warm.

Does this sound similar to your problem?

Think mine was leaking from somewhere else. From the top there was no visible leak but there was loads of diesel in the undertray.
