I am Thinking about putting the older Bullet type of mirrors on my tourer 2004 instead of the newer type it has on now.

Does any one know if the fitting are the same!!!.

Hope some one can tell me.

Hi Les

The "Bullets" are a straight swap mate.

Look much better than the "Project Drive" affair.

That's my opinion anyway :mrgreen:

Hope this helps

Not sure the mirror change was project drive driven (pardon the pun).

I'm sure there was some new legislation came in specifying the minimum size of mirrors, and I think that made them change.

EDIT:

Not sure when this came into force, but the EC regulations state this (yes you try to understand it).

The reflecting surface shall have dimensions such that it is possible to prescribe on it a rectangle one side of which is 40 mm in length and the other is 'a`:

a = 150 mm × >NUM>1 >DEN>1 + >NUM>1 000 >DEN>r

2.2. 'Main` outside mirrors (class L)

2.2.1. The minimum dimensions of the reflecting surface shall be such that:

2.2.1.1. Its area shall not be less than 6 900 mm²;

2.2.1.2. The diameter of circular mirrors shall not be less than 94 mm;

2.2.1.3. Where rear view mirrors are not circular, their dimensions shall enable a 78 mm-diameter circle to be prescribed on their reflecting surface.

2.2.2. The maximum dimensions of the reflecting surface shall be such that:

2.2.2.1. The diameter of any circular rear view mirror shall not be greater than 150 mm,

2.2.2.2. The reflecting surface of any non-circular rear view mirror shall lie within a rectangle measuring 120 mm × 200 mm.

Les,

The mirrors are the same fitting but you need to be careful of the foam inserts. They can be a little awkward to fit without the correct ones.

Hi Duncan

I saw Reebs' post on the OC Site, the mirrors are listed as a Project Drive instalment.

However, if legisation changed during production, then that would also make sense.

Can't understand the measurement though :confused: :confused:

Paul, I didn't know that the foam inserts were different! :em:

You learn something new everyday. :D

Simon, I think the later models had an insert made of a firmer grade of foam.

What I do remember, is trying to fit the bullet type with the newer foam. It takes quite a shove to get them far enough in for the screw or nuts to catch thread unless you hack them about a bit :) Easily doable but with care ;)

Yeah. And when they ping out without warning and drop on the ground... that's the same except no brute force... as I found out to my cost. :lol:

BFI is an extremely useful tool. Sometimes......

I was discussing 'project drive' items with Paul on Sunday. Some changes may have been assumed to be drive, but happened anyway. Also, there doesn't seem to be a specific cutoff. For example the battery retaining bolt got shortened, and seem to have happened on pre project drive cars.

I wasn't sure about the mirrors, as I can't see the new design would have saved any money over the old ones.

78mm seems a tad on the large size ( I am assuming the interior rear view mirror is included in the reg ??) but it's pouring it down outside, the house alarm is on and the door is locked so i'm not going to check :D

Not sure of the differences as Paul and Duncan described,
But when I switched mine to power-folds on a 2005 model
we had problems with the inserts and had to adapt originals.
Paul may remember it was at one of the great nano meets.
