Latch assemblies / central locking by PaulT

These seem to be something that regularly fails. My N/S front has failed - does not unlock but does lock.

Has anyone explored what actually goes wrong and can it be fixed or is it a case of fitting a new one?

It is the motor themselves, same motors as used in Vis motors with with a different drive shaft, one rotates clockwise and one anti. It is usually the brushes that fail.
To get the lock assy apart is an art in itself the clips were made to break as soon as you look at them. Then there is remembering where all the levers are positioned when you re assemble.

I have opened up and re assembled three now, two worked one didn't. I have around 20 sets of good serviceable brushes if anyone wants to try but it is not an easy task.

Dave, thanks for that - planned obsolescence then.

Will PM you about brushes.

No, not planned obsolescence. That's a fallacy. Just plain old crap design.

Thanks for the correction.

Did BMW use the same type of motor?

Not sure. I believe its basically a Bosch design, and the vast majority of cars use a similar design.

I am almost certain Freelander use the same lock motor, which could be used

Thanks Duncan - so Bosch is not that wonderful.

Arctic, Freelander and Rover MG have the same part 'number' but the Rover MG has an 'A' suffix added whatever that means - poorer quality?

Well, I certainly got my comeuppance.....

Dave very quickly sent me some brushes and when I received them I fully intended to pm him and thank him.

Busy week what with one thing and another it went out of my head.

This morning Dave PM'd me asking if I had received the brushes. PM'd him back with profuse apologies then off to bed as I was booked on the 01:05 Shuttle from Folkestone. Do not know why but logged on to BBC News and there it was 'EUROTUNNEL CLOSED'. Rebooked on to 01:23 on Tuesday here's hoping.
