I've had this for a while, and it's variable. The gearchange from 2nd to 3rd has never been as good as the rest, sometimes its not terribly good, other times its just noticable rather than bad, unlike the other changes which are near perfect
Sounds the same as my Freelander V6, most likely the 2/4 brake duty solenoid (think that's right). Very easy and cheap fix, however check fluid levels and get it changed as this is always the first port of call.
