I was in Court this morning dealing with the venue decision of a young man who was charged with dangerous driving.
In a venue decision, the Court is asked to decide whether an offence tryable either summarily or upon indictment is, in fact, tried in Magistrates' or Crown Court.
The defendant, who was unrepresented, said that he hadn't been driving dangerously and that his car, an M3, was perfectly capable and was perfectly under control at all times.
The prosecution showed the Court some of the video shot by the pursuing Police vehicles.
The alleged offence had taken place at approximately 23:30 on a Friday evening in the City centre in Wolverhampton and we saw the defendant's car pulling away from a Police car on the ring-road. The Police car was travelling at 142 mph at the time. The speed limit is 40 MPH on the ring-road.
We later saw the car being driven at upwards of 85 MPH in the 20 MPH zone and doing 60 MPH in a paved pedestrian precinct before executing a hand-brake turn.
The video finished when the car was brought to a halt after a "stinger" had been deployed.
We sent the case to the Crown Court.
