I was chairing a trial yesterday and found it necessary to gently remind the prosecutor of her purpose and remit. It was quite difficult to do though as the observation she made raised a hastily concealed smile in all of us on the Bench.
She was cross examining a defendant charged with benefit fraud and was starting to get under the skin, as it were.
The defendant said:- "You people have no idea what it's like for us working class"
The prosecutor said "But you don't, do you?"
Defendant "Don't what?"
Prosecutor "Work"
