We had before the bench today a man of 23 who was charged with kidnapping his children. His ex-partner had custody of them, a boy of three and a girl of four.
Already in breach of a non molestation order, he compounded the problem by snatching them from their child-minder and bundling them into the back of a van with another individual who, whilst known to the Police, was not known to the children who were said to be highly traumatised.
The Police had them back within 36 hours, but heaven knows what effect that will have had upon their young lives.
Kidnapping is an indictable only offence meaning that we had to send it forthwith to the Crown Court once the prosecution had proved to us that there was a case to answer.
As part of the prosecution presentation we were shown the ransom note left at the mother's flat:-
"If you want to see the kids alive again, give me my Playstation back."
