My 75 turbo has a somewhat disconcerting habit of lurching whenever the turbo kicks in. It's as if the engine cuts out, then the momentum of the car bump starts it again. Also, when this happens, there is a small cloud of blackish grey smoke from the exhaust. I've replaced the boost solenoid but to no avail. I'm fairly sure it's the turbo. I've looked on the Rimmer Bros site and it's £1,050 for a new turbo and I don't really have that kind of cash. There are a few re-manufactured ones on eBay. If you're careful with the throttle you can keep the turbo spinning but rather than a constant whistle, it chatters. I'm wondering if the bearings in the turbo have given up. I generally don't use the turbo, as I tend to change gear marginally above 2,000 revs, so the only time it has chance to really spin is when I'm cruising on the motorway. I'm worried that it will let go completely and throw oil into the engine. Does anyone have any advice?
